Greetings Race Fans!
Read this report as it could affect you!!!
That’s right folks it is once again that time of year when we are supposed to be planning our next season at the AGM.
I will preface this report with a form of disclaimer if you like, and I will start by saying that I am not having a personal “pop” at anyone as we all have to shoulder some responsibility for how the series progresses.
I would also say that sometimes the written word may appear to be harsh but that is not how I intend it and again I am not trying/ intending to offend anyone which of course is why you are all free to comment as I readily admit my opinion may not be the views of you all.
All I am hoping to do is to galvanise a few of us to get our heads together to get things moving.
Here we go then.
Firstly may I put on record that I really appreciated it when Dave stepped in last season as co-ordinator sacrificing his own option to race.
I must admit I did think that this would be a temporary measure and that Dave would return to racing once a new co-ordinator had been appointed.
I now understand Dave is actually happy to continue in his role as co-ordinator / chairman, if Dave is willing to continue then that is fine with me but I do feel that we must share out some of the responsibility for the running of the series and Dave you must allow us to do this……as there is a lot of room for improvement!!!
I know having spoken to many of you that there is a general concern that the series is not particularly well organised, we are losing drivers (for several reasons) and there seems to be no sense of direction.
We also seem to have lost a bit of our friendly atmosphere too…there are several reasons for this and I hope to make some suggestions in order to improve matters.
Dave is the current co-ordinator but it has to be said that :
1. The official website is poorly run and any new / potential driver looking at it would think the series had folded, and I believe unless we make some positive changes NOW that is exactly what will happen.
2. We also get very little communication from Dave as to what is going on with the MGCC, where we are heading and the series itself is not promoted in any way.
3. The rules are in parts overly complicated and not enforced.
4. The Technical Rep is like the will o’ the wisp, and despite his pledge to attend more often has only been seen at one race this year.
5. We do not have any scrutineer…as I understand it because the MGCC won’t pay for him.
6. The MGCC do not appear to offer any support to our race series.
7. We have too many race classes which often have few or no cars in them, which results in drivers having no one to actually compete against, or alternatively picking up a cup, for simply showing up.
8. We do not react quickly enough to keep classes competitive.
9. We do little to retain / encourage new drivers to the series.
We all need to step up a bit to save our series and to this end I would like to put forward the following proposals to allow time for reflection/discussion and then I will put them forward for official discussion at the AGM.
I am sure not everyone will like everything about them, but then of course we would like the classes to make us all individual winners I am sure!
In my view the series needs to address the following:
1) Rules. These need to be revised to ensure that as many competitors as possible can participate on a level playing field within their respective class, whilst at the same time ensuring there are as few classes as possible. I think 4 classes are more than adequate. If we cannot fit a car into one of those 4 classes than in all probability, we simply have to concede that we cannot assist everyone. At present the sheer number of classes is confusing, the rules are weak and as a result, the series is too complicated, so it puts off newcomers or there is no incentive for some existing competitors to remain. There is little point in having loads of classes with just one or two cars in them, this is not racing.
2) Identity of the series: We need to establish what we are trying to offer and encourage our drivers to feel part of our own club; i.e. that we exist for the benefit of the drivers and there are real benefits from being a member of this group. We also need to establish an identity that does not rely on our sponsor’s name.
3) Structure of the committee. I think the current structure is not working in that few people know what they are supposed to be doing and others have too much to address. I propose a structure as follows:
CHAIRMAN / CO-ORDINATOR/ ADMINISTRATOR: this person is the figure head of the series and is responsible for ensuring that his committee members understand and carry out their roles; he would also be our representative with the MGCC, fighting our corner pursuant to the instructions of the drivers.
TREASURER: Responsible for finances, ensuring subs are paid, processing all sponsorship money etc.
TECHNICAL OFFICER: Advises on all technical issues and assists in ensuring that the rules are fair and understood, that the scrutineers understand and enforces rules, available to provide technical support to driver’s enquiries, guidance on all technical issues to include monitoring success of rules and ongoing revisions as may be required.
COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER: Deals with all publicity and communications for the series, to include complete responsibility for website, race reports, commentators notes, programme notes, press releases, publicity, newsletters etc.
COMMERCIAL OFFICER: Responsible for introducing and obtaining as many benefits as possible for the drivers, to include sponsorship, discounts, finding commercial partners.
DRIVERS REP: Not convinced we need one per class, but if sufficient volunteers then so be it. Duties include getting drivers to enter on time, filtering all driver enquires, assisting novice drivers; probably sensible to nominate one person to have overall responsibility for assisting new drivers,
SOCIAL SECRETARY; organises and encourages social events, ideally far beyond annual d&d.
I am happy to continue as social secretary and to take on a wider remit if required.
Alan Jones of Miss Daisy fame has offered to take on the role of Communications Officer.
Pete Burchill is happy to continue as treasurer.
Richard Tinkler is currently Club Secretary and although I have not specified this as a role I would see him continuing with his activities in the series but many of his duties currently overlap with those of the treasurer.
Dave Brooke has indicated he wishes to continue as chairman / co-ordinator.
So to close then, the future of our series rests in our own hands and while it would be nice for us to just turn up and race, in the current climate we all need to help in some way to ensure the series goes forward and grows in these hard times.
It was not that long ago when the PBIC was regularly turning out the biggest grids each race meeting and although we never got the recognition by the MGCC we were the strongest series in town.
Times have changed and we need to change with them to get ourselves back from the brink to become bigger and better than before.
We were originally the Phoenix Challenge….maybe there was a good reason for that name, let us rise to that Challenge again!!!!

Re - MGCC view on TV ” thought it was rather dull to watch and there seemed little interest in the opportunity.”
Madness TV means full grids and the chance to blag a few hundred quid from your local garage/exhaust centre at least……….
Clive well put re classes, they are key but a lot of chest puffing and walking away was done by many last season over this……
From the outside in, the Cockshoot looks very organised 4 classes (all be it the MGF class has low numbers) mixing old and new together.
Looks like a lengthy drivers meeting.
***RACE DATES FOR NEXT YEAR***
Yes you saw it here first, still provisional but these are the likely dates, note Season Opener @ Donington not Oulton Park.
Donington Park Sunday 8th April (Easter Sunday)
Brands Hatch (Indy) Sat.–Sun. 5th & 6th May
MG Live Silverstone (Arena GP) Sat.–Sun. 23rd & 24th June
Oulton Park (International) Saturday 11th August
Thruxton Sunday 9th September
Snetterton (200) Sat.–Sun. 13th & 14th October - Incorporating the BMH 4 Hour Relay Race
A big THANK-YOU to MGCC if these dates are confirmed as we will be let loose @ Thruxton again! Brilliant!
As I am not getting any info from the Official Side about the Do, can I ask if anyone will be able to provide a screen to project the Xmas Video on?
I have had a sneak preview & I have to say Dan has really excelled himself this year,a really profesional job. The DVD will have footage from this year’s racing and the compilation from last season will also be on it. They will be available to buy at the Do - all profits to the PBIC Coffers (not the MGCC). If you can’t get to the Do I thoroughly recommend you order a copy from Team Neaves Racing.
Clive,
Well thought out write up as usual and should get everyone thinking.
Race calender looks better than the first provisional one. Nice to see Thruxton on there again. It would be nice to add another venue so we don’t end up with all double headers again!
James
I can provide the screen again…
Regarding your comments about the rules structure etc the format is prescribed so we can’t do much about that, there have been significant efforts by the class representatives (which is why we have them) to clear up the regulations. The number of classes has been the subject of much discussion but some competitors don’t want cars running to the same technical regs from other championships in with themselves because they go faster, others want some cars pushed out of a class just because they’re different…perhaps classes that are poorly supported may be amalgamated at race meetings or just excised altogether - just how many people do we want to upset? Is it better to have more competitors out racing or fewer
of them in a reduced number of classes?
The only solution is to go down the Top Hat/HRDC/Tin Tops route where there are virtually no technical regulations and it’s just a glorified trackday where who spends most has greatest chance of winning.
Some discussion points for over a beer or two maybe, as if we need an excuse to venture to the bar!
Thanks for the screen Alan, offer accepted! I feel there must be a way to simplify the rules, as opposed to the track day option. Lap times of cars/power outputs something like this? I don’t see why different cars should be excluded for this reason alone.
The main objective must be to get full grids & have a race with someone….
Well done Jonesey, there is certainly a major need to inject some structure and communication into the club, as well as a full review of the regulations.
On the regulations, here’s an anonymous opinion on where we should be heading…
Regs should be locked down to components and part numbers, and should go in to much more detail. See other championships (Ma5da Championship Regs: http://www.ma5daracing.com/mk1/eventguide/2011/autumn/files/regulations.pdf & Trophy Championship Regs http://www.mgcc.co.uk/images/stories/trophyregs.pdf etc.)
There should be as few classes as possible; cars should be placed in the classes based on the fastest times by a car of the same type set in any championship. If the car has not been raced in any championship before, the club will review the car and decide how fast it could reasonably go, then place it in an appropriate class.
A ballasting rule shall be enforced and ballasting kit be made available through the club. Ballast may be added to ANY car at any time at the discretion of the club.
Current class A should be made class B.
Current classes B and C should be amalgamated to class C.
A new class A should be for true road-going cars. No head mods, stock suspension all round etc. There are cars from the BCV8 and MGOC championships that will be eligible for this.
Class D should be poised to accept MG ZR 190 when the Trophy championship no longer caters for them.
Cars not complying with the new regulations will have 1 year to comply.
The technical officer for the championship must be replaced with one who is proactive and visible at ALL race meetings. The technical officer shall be given power to check any car at any time and have a number of disciplinary procedures at his/her disposal.
Whether or not my opinions are shared, and whatever your personal opinion as a reader, one thing is for sure; without change the club WILL lose more racers and WILL prevent new racers from joining.
A Racer.
And who is going to check these part numbers? The level of scrutineering required is considerable, and therefore expensive. With manufacturer supported (paid for) series or over-subscribed grids such restrictive practices might be achievable but from where do you obtain geniune non-pattern parts for a 40 year old car? And which variant - are all B’s to run as 3 synchro pull handle roadsters or rubber bumper GT’s?
Don’t forget that we are trying to accommodate all, if not most, models of MG and achieve some parity between them so that they can race against each other in each class.
Re number of classes, the drivers who pay their entry fees, turn up, and race have asked for the class structure that we have.
We have long had the situation where reasonably well specified cars have not been driven to their full potential. One case in point was the MGC where the regs were originally written around a slow driver in a fast car, as soon as a fast driver turned up in one the true performance was apparent.
One of the major gripes of late has been that cars of identical specification seem to go faster in other championships than they do in ours. Claims of technical inegibility are rife to justify the performance differences…
Finally, I think you’ll find that the range of disciplinary options is prescribed by the MSA. I believe 1kg under weight should be exclusion, a fine and possibly even a licence endorsement. Sadly the rules are written for high level, high stakes and high-cost championships and don’t take much account of club level racing funded from people’s own pockets.
Clive,
Seem you’ve got some debate going.
The post of Coordinator is vacant.
I personally don’t like regs written around permissible part numbers for a series where the vehicles manufacturer no longer exists and hence factory parts are not available for reference. What happens even when the manufacturer exists and they change parts supplier? the new bit looks different but has the same part code, does it behave the same?
Perhaps we should just have three classes - slow, medium and fast. Win slow twice and you get bumped up into medium for the rest of the year.
And my closing comment on TV coverage - all the companies that have approached club racing offering to get you on TV want to be paid to turn up, then they walk away with the rights to what we’ve done and try to sell it to someone. If you want to pay £500 each to have a race televised….. I can do a trackday including trailer hire and all fuel for that much.
Ladies & Gents,
I have sent out the Agenda for the AGM via email to you all. If your email has changed or you did not receive the Agenda please let me know & I will send you a copy.
Jonesey
Perhaps in the next few years we could have north and south welsh rounds

A full summary of the AGM will follow shortly. The new website is under construction and will be a few weeks in the making but should offer lots more facilities to the registered drivers.
Not for the faint hearted, some photos of the Dinner/Dance will also be included.
A message from Ron:
MG LIVE at Silverstone. 23rd and 24th June 2012
The MG Car Club are delighted to confirm that agreement has been reached with Silverstone Circuits Ltd for the Clubs premier race event to take place on the Grand Prix Circuit on the dates above. For 2012 Silverstone Circuits will run host the test day on the 22nd for those competitors wishing to drive the circuit prior to the Saturday qualifying. Access for other race competitors will be late on the Friday.
The decision to go to a two day event for the event has been driven by ever increasing costs and the present economic outlook. We are making every effort to minimise costs to competitors and hope that we will be able to, at the least , maintain the race costs at close to 2011 levels.
The Club are planning a very full programme of races for the event, containing as usual all of our Championships and Series, along with invited groups. Very few Clubs can offer their members the opportunity of driving the GP circuit which only a few days afterwards will be hosting the British GP. We will continue to use the original paddock and race control as previous.
We look forward to welcoming all of the Clubs members to our 62nd year of consecutive race meetings at Silverstone
The Clubs 2012 race programme kicks off on Sunday 8th April at Donington Park, we hope to see you all there
Best regards
Ron Gammons
