NEC report 2010
Greetings Race Fans & Happy New Year to you all.
The annual tradition of the Motorsport Show at the NEC saw the usual subjects in attendance.
Blagger “it’s for the kids” Burchill was lapping the hall quicker than he laps a circuit (not difficult I hear you say) nabbing all the good discounts for the Loony Team.
He was closely followed by AlanF & son to record his actions on film.
Team Neaves were also out in force using their tried and trusted technique of boring the stall holders into submission and getting discounted products, so long as they agreed to move along to another stand.
Very little was left for Jonesey Racing so I had to be content with a collection of carrier bags and a show guide.
Later during the day Long Haired Dave and Brooke junior appeared.
An impromptu meeting was held around the bar area where we met Jerry of Silverstone Tyres.
He put forward a proposal to better any rival tyre suppliers 2010 price on both his own Silverstone brand and also other branded tyres. I understand the Silverstone tyres are subject of a test by one of the car magazines where they offered comparable performance for a lower price than the well known brands…..sounds a bit like the Daz test to me.
Jerry has asked if drivers could submit a list of the tyres they are currently running and the best price they can genuinely get them for.
He has offered to do free fitting and balancing and provide a support van at the races.
I presume there may be a requirement for the cars to have his stickers on too but perhaps LHD could confirm this.
In any event I have offered to compile the list of tyres currently required by drivers to see if Jerry can better the prices being paid.
As I understand it there will be no obligation for drivers to run or purchase tyres from Jerry but certainly in my view if we can save a few bob on running costs and have the back-up at the circuit that cannot be a bad thing.
Let know know your views.
I also understand that we have a new treasurer in the shape of Blagger Burchill. In all honesty this is a thankless task and I wish him the very best of luck with it.
Again LHD can correct me if I have got this wrong but I believe with Burchill on board this will allow our series a little bit more say in how things are run, against when the MGCC managed things???
I also asked LHD how the race calendar was looking and he is on the case but appears to be encountering some delays in the response from the Official Side. Hopefully we will soon have those dates sent out.
I have had a few interesting suggestions for the Caption Competition, most of which I will be able to print “in no particular order”.
I will announce the results next month and will naturally respect the requests for anonymity by some of the entrants!
It looks like another interesting and exciting season lies before us especially with several new drivers joining, some of whom are seasoned veterans from other series.
Dave if you are able to get me a list of any of the newbies I will print a brief character assassination of them, or of course the drivers can send me in their details direct.
I am also aware that several new projects are in hand, if you are happy for me to put these in the public domain let me know….otherwise I may have to drop some strong hints or resort to my usual fabrication and embellishment techniques.
That’s all for now…..hopefully I will be able to print a fuller update next month.
Jonesey

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWe run 205/50/15’s
Toyo R888’s £80+VAT each
Yoko 048’s £125+VAT each
These are the cheapest prices I have found on the net. It’s woth mentioning that Toyo’s prices have gone up by 60% as of 2010, so when retailers stock from 2009 runs out, the price of toyo’s will go up big time, some retailers have already put their prices up!
Ollie
Tyre wise, I run Panelli Ditchfinders. I pay £3 each or can get 4 for a tenner.
Is that the same if you are over 21?
Tweeks are showing 185/60/14 Yokos @ £74.57p + VAT & Delivery…although they do negotiate a bit…
Also, is LHD really MG Benji?
Toyo R888 205 40 17 £89-£120 depending on blagging skills
I have put the provisional race dates on the Race Dates Page…., inspired I thought, these are no doubt still provisional and are for only five meetings. This info taken from the MGCC site. No official word from our illustrious leaders as yet…and also so far, quite limited feed-back re the tyres.

Thing is he dose not say which weekend it will be updated?
Only 8 weeks to the closing date for BH

Another email has been sent to all 2009 addresses the PBIC has to hand. If you have not received this email then please email us to let us know.
Honestly that’s not as stupid as it looks/sounds!

Well-done Dave
Get filling in those Registration & Entry forms
Just done my & its only 9:30 in the morning
Probably best if I had a look in the garage to see if the car still works
With two batteries attached and a good deal of persuasion I finally got the old clunker started, only to find that she had sheared off two manifold studs in the process….here we go again!
Fist turn of the key & it started, the joys of a modern K-series
That’s enough for one day.
Jonesey,
Might I suggest brass nuts
They are softer than the studs and easier to replace if they strip.
Dave
Gentlemen,
The potential for a tyre support deal exists with Service and Sport who are
importers of Silverstone Tyres. Their website is here for those interested in
background http://www.serviceandsport.com/
We have now met with Service and Sport who are offering to supply tyres to
the series as well as attend meetings/track days for fitting, general back
up and support etc. We have indicated to Service and Sport that they will
need to beat current prices being paid for tyres, which they seem willing to
do, on the basis that the numbers are viable. If you are interested in this
being developed, can you please confirm:
The brand, type and size of tyre that you currently use and the best price
you currently pay, to include VAT, fitting, buffing or other costs, postage
etc. Please also confirm how many tyres you are likely to buy in the course
of the 2010 season, if you use the services of fitter to change tyres around on
rims etc, and whether a supplier for the series and support at the
circuit would be of interest to you.
You now need to act so there is time to organise things.
Responses please to Alan Jones whose email should be the only visible
recipient! How soon ? replies to Alan by Monday 8th February, just a week to
reply with a few bits of information.
Why Alan ? He is the coordinator of the Fiat Racing Challenge who are already
involved with Service and Sport so he already has an established relationship.

Must have been the threat that did it….
More to do with the Optimate trickle charger I brought before winter that keeps the battery in good condition
Should be a good season and clearly from correspondance lots of double headers even better
Still amazed that Silverstone is not a double header, is it possible that MGCC can sell the other races to different championships? & We are not required make up the numbers?
I think we had 44 for qualifying last year, which must have been the biggest grid for one championship which is quit a bit more than some of the others.
It will be interesting when the entry forms come out to see which races are expected to fill a grid on their own rather than sharing !?!
Blimey, what’s going on? First Blagger Burchill slips in as treasurer now I see Church Lane racing stalwart R. Tinkler Esq is the PBIC Secretary….whatever next….Dave to shave his beard off?
The Carrot Cruncher to re-grow his hair?
I hear the MGCC are promising us 20 minute races at Silverstone, with the longer lap distance they are giving us a bit more time to get round!
I see Peter-the pen-Bramble has been busy over the closed season!
A note regarding Silverstone tyres, they do not manufacture 185×60x14s only 55 profile, which in my humble opinion is too low for a standard B regardless of the cost savings offered, they are also claiming considerable improvement in lap times, which if true must be at the expense of tyre wear, negating any savings but forcing those with the want to win to scrap off those Yokos and buy a new set.
Wilson.
Tyres will always be a tricky one, as with all things those who can buy new every race will have an advantage. I have a similar prob 205 40 17 are not offered but I would be interested in price saving offered on other brands. Anything that helps on cost is a good thing. (Tarmac rally tryes are a good option road legal cut slick remoulds good enough for cosworth escorts or 6r4’s bargain prices)
Wilson,
The tyres can be supplied in Soft, Medium or Hard compound for the same cost, so if you are worried about wear you could always get the hard’s or medium’s?
Ollie
Hi every one;
Just on the of chance,is there any one out there who might be discarding a set of 16 inch
or 15 inch yoko 048,s or 032,s or r888,s for the zr or the f.
If so it would be greatly appreicated.
all the best Dave
Hi All,
Am I correct in thinking that the seasonal entry form is now available ? If so could someone foward a copy to me at paul@ewrayment.com
Many Thanks
I think that the only Silverstone list 1B tyre is the FTZ Sport RR
The ones Pete’s mentions are list 4 & only suitable for rallying, some of these low price tyres that they use in rallying are in fact remoulds, which is a no no in circuit racing.
They may be o.k. for track days?
Just check blue book before ordering
Just check the blue book before ordering. Good point John, wouldn’t want half the grid being disqualified at the first round!
Rally tyres is a difficult one as those who saw the 6r4 go out at snetterton was on them, as they are standard on tarmac stages and have to be road legal for rallies as cars drive on a/b roads between stages, did not realise they could not be used in races as they are road legal and you can get mot with them, as they are not marked for race use only…..
Back to drawing board then…….
http://www.ears.co.uk/motorsport/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_RB5_F2_Moulded_Slick_59.html
Irrespective of being road legal they have to be on the current permitted tyre list in the blue book
I.E. PBIC Class A,B & F can only use List 1A or List 1B tyres
PaulR,
Keep an eye on the championship website, its slowly coming to life again…
Classes A and B say any E marked tyre other than remoulds. Class C is any road or race tyre that fits on the rim. Class F is the only one that says list 1A or 1B tyres.
The Porsche 924’s ran on Colway remoulds for years, so there can’t be a problem with them. As has been mentioned multi-hundred HP and heavy rally cars use remoulds on more abrasive surfaces than we run on. The 6R4 was running way too soft a tyre which is why they had the wear problem. Those tyres were in fact slicks, the ones that lasted the rest of the day were i believe the remoulded 17% treaded ones.
So were dose that leave us:
Class A & B Can not use due to being remoulds
Class C Any tyre what about remoulds?
Class F List 1A or 1B
****BREAKING NEWS***
I am hearing rumours that Maggie Yeadon has resigned from the MGCC…. Maggie has long been part of the PBIC and also during it’s previous guises.
If these rumours are true I am sure she will be sorely missed…..
Can any of the powers that be shed any light on this?
I understand that Maggie has resigned from the MGCC, this is a great shame.
Hopefully Maggie will still want to be involved in the PBIC. From my own front I wish here well as she will be missed.
Peter
Has Dave made Maggie a better offer?
Is it possible that Maggie may have re-tyred?
We may have to remould her into a new position?
So as not to rubber her up the wrong way
We may have to tread carefully?
I’m quite deflated to hear Maggie has resigned, she was always well balanced and kept a good grip on everything.
I am not sure how to gauge these comments, perhaps the pressure was too much?
perhaps Maggie just wanted to keep a lower profile
Rockingham Motor Speedway - PBIC Test day?
Right here goes 12th March which is a friday there is a general test at Rockingham that currently has enough space on for us you get 5 sessions on track at 30 mins a time which gives us time to schedule the rolling road power runs in between.
We could also lay on a barbeque or arrange something in the evening if people were interested for a small fee. We could arrange garage shareing to help keep the cost down the track time is £200 inc vat then the garages are £50 each the power runs with colour printouts are £30 each
Numbers required in next week so we can confirm costs
http://www.rockingham.co.uk/track/testing.asp
Count me in Pete, seems like a lot of track time for the money if you ask me!
Maybe you shouldn’t have mentioned the rolling road though as some may see this as a deterrent rather than an attraction….
Ollie
Note to All,
Spoke to TSL today after hearing various romours about renting transponders in 2010. They have confirmed that due to new wording in the blue book they will no longer be bringing spares to the track or renting them out so we all need to make sure we have our own.
Does anyone have a spare transponder I can borrow…….
if so please email me!
Ollie

Oulton Park Regs are out
Two races of 20 minutes & only £320.00
Dave do you have any say in the number of races/race lengths that are at each meeting for the PBIC.?
I thought that when we had two rounds per meeting they were normally 15 minute races?
Or do the car club just divide the allotted track time by the number of races & charge accordingly
Expensive game this, gone are the days of 170 races and 260 double headers.
Transponders will be a surprise to those that rent
John and the rest….
I can’t speak for the Bearded One but I will always try and get as much benefit for the PBIC as possible.
The MGCC found itself almost a race short at Oulton so finding myself offered a double header but ‘you need to decide now’ I said yes. apologies to those who don’t like Oulton but I think it’s a brilliant circuit and I know several of you will agree with me !! Usual MGCC rules apply in that if we are last race and the program slips we will get good terms but at the end of the day if you don’t enter I don’t care how loudly you complain.
Cadwell and Snetterton races last year were 20 minutes and while we’re on the subject I have assumed that the Cadwell races are prefered to be on the Sunday now that the meting runs over two days?
If an extra date or race where to be offered do we take it?
Most important though is that unless we can demonstrate the potential to have big grids we don’t have bargaining power, sp get your registrations in to Richard and submit those season entry forms.
News you got here first!
We have provisionally arranged a Mallory Park date for July the 25th at the Morgan Birthday celebration alongside the Thoroughbreds.
Hopefully PBIC website will update this weekend but don’t hold your breath.
Dave
Usual MGCC rules apply in that if we are last race and the program slips we will get good terms
Not sure about we will get good terms, Do they not just shorten the race like they did at Snetterton? & All ways have a reason why it is not their fault.
I have assumed that the Cadwell races are preferred to be on the Sunday now that the meting runs over two days?
Two-day meetings, my preference is for one race on each day.
I know the Fox will not agree with me here but I would always prefer for any double headers to be on JUST THE ONE DAY….this means I would not have to take a day off to travel up on the Friday. Also I know many drivers do work over the weekends so confining races to one day only helps them too.
I do not have major problem with one day or two day meetings, just as long as it is a majority decision & not done to suit the minority.
One day or two day meetings? Can’t please all of the people all of the time…
Double headers over 2 days makes sense, and not last race on the sunday.
This way you get time to enjoy the weekend and incase of issues have a fighting chance of sorting car. Snetterton was best last season in that respect.
Ollie
Re Transponders, I too feel your pain regarding the transponders, I too am now in the position of buying one, this on top of throwing away a very expensive Arai helmet, “as new” seatbelts and emptying a perfectly servicable fire extinguiser leaves one some what smarting. To cap it all I am reliably informed that these transponders do not actually time the cars, this is still done manually with stop watches (or calenders in my case) and mearly used for identification….
Wilson
It’s the old cliche, “how do you make a small fortune in motor-racing…?”….
Of course I am sure the cash you have saved on race entries will be more than enough for a transponder ay Ollie?
behave Jonesey……
Luckily a very kind chap I know has agreed to loan me one for Brands Hatch.
Entry list now on MGCC website, I am informed that we have 21 entries as at lunchtime today although only 15 or so are shown on the entry list. Come on chaps, get those entries in.
Ollie
Should be good first race, I will not be at Brands but Dan will be running in the ZS.
Hopefully see a few of you testing at Rockingham?
good old paddock hill…
BE WARNED!!!!! THIS CAME FROM A VERY RELIABLE SOURCE. WATCH YOUR WALLET.
Clever Scam - taking advantage of older men
Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven’t heard about it. This will only become more commonplace as the weather warms.
A ‘heads up’ for those men who may be regular B&Q, Comet, or Costco customers. This one caught me by surprise.
Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don’t be naive enough to think it couldn’t happen to you or your friends.
Here’s how the scam works:
Two seriously good-looking 20-something girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say ‘No’ and instead ask you for a ride to McDonalds.
You agree and they get into the back seat. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen June 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th,17th, 20th, 24th, & 29th. Also July 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 20th, 21st, 23rd, 24th, and 30th three times last Monday and very likely again this upcoming weekend.
So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of older men.
Warn your friends to be vigilant.
Asda has wallets on sale for £2.99 each. I found cheaper ones for £1.99 at Tesco and bought them out. Also, you never will get to eat at McDonalds. I’ve already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth to Tesco’s.
ahh spring is in the air and the jokes are bursting forth!…Pre-race report later this month and the lucky caption winner will be announced!
