Greetings Race Fans!
Well if you weren’t at Oulton you really missed a treat! Although it didn’t rain nevertheless a cracking days racing was had by all.
The early morning call prompted several Peter Best Drivers to arrive on Friday evening in readiness for the Saturday race.
I had just a short six hour jaunt along the M6 before I got to the track that evening to find that only a smattering of Metros (hurrah) were setting up camp and even better they had left their ghetto blasters at home.
Soon after I spotted Dr. Evil and the Blue Streak (because they are inseparable as we know) arrive. Shortly followed by Primrose and the Trombonist.
We set up our various tents etc, except for the two James’s who had elected to sleep in their cars…I imagine Mr Rigg did the same but I know not where.
We all reconvened in the bar for a night cap which sadly resulted in the Church Lane Racing Team and myself turning in at 12.30. But not to worry we managed to reawaken the two James’s as they had no way way of preventing torch light shining into their cars.
Practice
Raucous crow cawing woke us all up at 6am only to be greeted by the beaming face of the Loony photographer who was marshalling that day and the booming voice of Burchill who was marshalling his team of students.
I must say how impressed I was with the scrutineers. It just goes to show you do not need to take half an hour over every car to get us through. They still pulled up several cars for minor safety infringements but we went through at break-neck speed….Donington take note!!
We eagerly zoomed out for practice and I intended to slot in behind Dr Evil as he warmed up his tyres so I could pick up some tips. Sadly he warmed them up in the pit lane and by turn three he had gone!
Practice was quite eventful for some as Ewart Kitson blew a head gasket early on, a problem which despite sterling efforts later coupled with clouds of smoke he was never to recover from.
Brooke Junior managed an early spin but still recorded a quicker time than me and placed 16th on the grid. Burchill decided to use practice as a wind up session slowing down in front of me and then zooming off….just because he could, securing 15th on the grid in his recently tweaked car.
The Blue Streak JD took pole for class A proving that sleepless nights are the best way to prepare for the race.
Simon Cripps secured overall pole by using the traditional stop-watch method in place of a transponder but in fairness there was little any of the regulars could offer by way of a challenge to him.
Both Weasley in the yellow peril and John “the assassin” Wreghitt, or Wreck-it as he is usually known had some work to do post-practice.
Wreck-it had done a bit of grass-tracking and smashed his spoiler up and Weasley the Pirouette expert seems to delight in rebuilding his car in between practice and race.
The Race
After a quick spot of lunch the race was upon us and 24 potential race winners lined up on the grid.
I decided to try and avoid my usual wheel-spin start with the aim of trying to set off with everyone else this time round.
The lights went out and the usual mayhem ensued with 24 cars all trying to go for the same bit of track in turn one.
I managed to get past Burchill (hurrah) who was busy stubbing his fag out at the start.
Wreck-it was on a suicide mission, but sadly it was assisted suicide as he tried to assist me to an early death by grinning at me and with a banshee wail offered me the choice of grass or his off-side front wing!
By turn two The Blue Streak had blown his engine, which must really have been a bitter blow having secured pole in practice. But all’s fair in love and racing which meant one more place for me!
Another monumental battle then ensued once again between me, Brooke Junior and Wreck-it but also in the mix was the Silver Fox John Bincliffe in 71 and also John Bussey in car 2 who was fully committed to his drive-it-like-you-stole it technique in his TC. That car should NOT be as quick as that!!!
Lap after lap we fought on with various desperate lunges being made by all at the chicanes. Wreghitt and Bussey filled my mirrors one minute and then were side by side with me the next!
All the while the Brooke Metro clung on in front until a foxy move by Binnacle led to a lock up in car 44 at the chicane (where else?) and I nipped though closely followed by cars 2 and 5.
Up the hill and I had the unpleasant task of trying to stop both these cars passing me on either side!
I started to close up on the Silver Fox in the corners only for him to hit the loud peddle and pull away on the exits.
A couple more laps and who knows what the outcome would have been?
However there weren’t a couple more laps and as we passed the chequered flag it was 71, 40 and 2…as Wreck-it had put in a last corner spin to end with a flourish allowing 44 and good old Burchill past at last knockings!!
A very exciting and quite exhausting race ended up with Cripps 1st, James Walpole 1st in class A, short haired Dave taking class B honours.
Some interesting points in the race were that Simon Tinkler in Primrose car 18 took fastest lap in class A. I don’t believe this is all down to the driver Simon????
The wheel came off literally for Kevin Stibbards and both Bussey and Burchill recorded quicker laps than me but finished behind me…..that’s racing!
Miss Daisy should be happy with improved reliability and also shaving 4 seconds off her qualifying time.
Legs of Doom achieved his ambition of making last place his own, and Dave Brown in car 26 seems to be well on the way to resolving the teething troubles in his F only just losing out to the trombonist.
Wherever we finished I think we all had a really enjoyable race and to top it all off the first three finishers were made to stand on some wooden blocks at the presentation, looking to all intents and purposes as though they were facing a firing squad.
Of particular note I thought, was Vic Reeves look-a-like Barry Holmes who with a prior Fancy Dress Party commitment had already changed into his giant canary costume to save time!
Well done!!!!
There you are folks, all set for the next round at Brands in a few weeks time.
If the rest of the season carries on like this it should be a real corker!!!
Thanks to you all for the synchronised heckling ( sorry I mean cheering) when I got my 3rd place pot…..the cheque is in the post. And thanks to those manning (or should I say personning) the hospitality tent…I really enjoyed the Hog-roast rolls yum!)
I was also pleased to see the newly formed and no doubt soon to be disbanded Welsh contingent of the Jonesey-Racing fan club attired in co-ordinating regalia…I know, you couldn’t make it up could you? But thanks for turning up, I hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did.
See you at Brands!!!!
Jonesey

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackSounds like you all had fun and no write offs. Can’t be bad. Counting the days to Snett as I sit here at work on a Sunday! Luckily the GP is on the 12′ briefing screen in front of me to numb the pain…
Yes it was a good day & you were missed, so much so we christened one part of the track “Penguins Leap” in your honour!!
On form as ever Mr Jones, looking forward to Brands.
Thanks to Ben Rodziewicz (BGTV8 87) for a good clean tussle in practise, and Niall Campbell (MGC 55) for a good race.
See you all at Brands.
Pete
I have yet to meet these guys…so will spare them from any disparaging comments, for now…
Glad you all behaved yourselves i wont be marshalling another i missed all the banter
and didnt get to talk to you guys,My ladtook the photos for this one and got some good ones they will be available to view this week just letme know Jonesy and Pete which ones you want and i will sort em for you
I only want the ones showing me in front of Burchill,…oh that will be all of them then!!!!
We need marshals, don’t stop now!
Hmmm, slightly worried about your unhealthy obsession with competitors sleeping arrangements Mr Jones! Maybe it was a good thing I was at the other end of the paddock (in the cheap end of the garage block) where your torch wouldn’t reach. The drawback to that location was the half mile car push to scutineering in the morning, and as you said the scrutineers were so quick there was no time to catch a breath before having to push it back again.
I was running the same fuel strategy in the race as Massa did in Barcelona, I might have dropped a few more places than he did but at least I didn’t drop any points!
Hi every one.
lovely day at oulton, paul maybe next time you have a massa moment you might let me know first ,so that i might be able to help you out about dropping a point, just to be helpful of course.
Anyway well drove and good to see that one of the fleet is in good shape and with another couple of quid,s worth of juice a well deserved placing a little further up the
field was on the cards,
well done every one from what i saw very good clean close racing.
Sunday it is then…. but we’ll let LHD have his exclusive….
Competitive on track & off one might say…
Both race on Sunday at Brands Hatch, if I remember right this was voted on at the drivers meeting with Saturday & Sunday winning the vote, if it dose not suit just ignore it?
Makes you wonder why we go to a drivers meet?
May as well wait & be told of the changes later?
I don’t recall that vote but perhaps Dave could comment?…however there has been some discussion over the last month or so regarding the amount of double-headers we had and also the difficulties of attending a full weekend…this was also subject to a vote by the drivers and although I have not seen the results myself, all those who chose to vote via this website (me included) expressed a preference for a single day if the MGCC could accommodate us…which it seems they have been good enough so to do.
Silverstone & Cadwell will possibly have small grids then?
With Friday qualifying at Silverstone, when will we know which day the race will be on?
Should Cadwell be a double header if Saturday causes problems for most?
This may cause people to miss two rounds, as it is not the easiest circuit travel wise.
Snetterton is also shown as a two-day meeting
I think the view was that there were rather a lot of double-headers for our series, as you point out if they were all over two days this may be a bit much for people to deal with. I too would like to know in advance which day the race is on as I do have to arrange time off especially when travelling up the day before, but I am told that these decisions are not made until the number of entries are counted, hence the advantage of getting the entries in early. Who said we are qualifying on Friday at S/Stone??
May’s Safety Fast, Race Torque, page 56 by Ron Gammons
MG Live mentions that some qualifying will take place on Friday afternoon.
Coys, they are paying most of the bill so lots of racing hence no practice on the weekend. There will be lots of drivers not happy to turn up friday then come back sunday to race.
Earlier the better as I will need to book time of work as if its a 7am start on the Friday best to get down on Thursday night, I better start saving as the good lady is going to make me pay for this…..
They had better be paying ALL the bill if they think I’m qualifying on Friday & racing on Sunday!!!
no one really expects you to do any racing…..
And it’s only £20.00 per night to pitch your tent.
the MG Clive entry form is now on the MGCC site and we are not qualifying on Friday acording to that
The entry form for Silverstone is now up on the MGCC main web site. We are racing on Sunday. The Saturday races that have Friday qualifying are clearly stated and none of this applies to Peter Best, it’s Sunday for us.

Cheers Paul, another rumour scotched!
A long way ahead I know but Cadwell being a double header has been the case for some years now and given the limited grid compared to other circuits I think we will fill it, although I am disapointed the meeting is on a Saturday this year.
Snetterton is expected to be similar in schedule to the last two years with our penultimate round on the Saturday then the final round on sunday prior to the 4 hour relay race.
Strange that the silverstone entry form is not accessable from the motor sport pages on the MGCC site, and it would be nice to see the entries to date for Brands….
I think the MGCC site has a small glitch as neither Brands nor S/Stone entries are showing.
looks like a full grid for Brands, should be good, with 3 vhpd B’s see you staurday night
Pete
Yes, I hope they manage to get the reserves out too…I will be taking a leaf out of your book and will drive up on the day…so expect that cheery text Saturday night!
Thanks mate, you can get coffees in then during the day
Pete
I’ll bring the Brandy too, you’ll need it after Paddock Hill Bend….don’t try & deny it!!!
Hey Jonesey, save some of that Brandy for me, I think I might need it after my first trip down the infamous Paddock Hill Bend…
That is assuming you make it round in the 1st place, actually you may need the Brandy before that…I have just finished my pre-race report for Brands & will publish it on Friday…be afraid!
Good news for the reserves is that with the cooperation of the Drayton Manor Metro Championship we should be getting everyone out to race. Can’t confirm the exact details now - possibly more news later…..
Does that include Mr Wreck-it?
Mmm, I hope that they have not split the grid and put some of the PBIC cars out with the Metro’s. You know it will be class A they do it to!
I take it the Prototype Blue Streak Mk2 engine has been fitted in place of the blown one then?
Greetings one and all! As self appointed gibberish monitor, I glad to seem that there is an unlying streak of gibberish.
As for the brandy young Neaves! A health snifter is recommended before attempting Paddock Hill for the first time.
Also keep the cork!!!!!! Enjoy.
Off to detune my car further….. If thats possible!
Class A has too many entries for the available space in the Metro Grid so they are not moving….
***STOP PRESS***
Blaine Neaves spotted at Chelsea Flower Show….
Green-fingered Blaine
He looks great in that dress
I guess this means group C will not be moving either Dave?
Well spotted Jonesey, incidentally I asked old Blaine what he was doing about his well oversized race suit, all he said in response was that He Wears It Well.
Hows that on the gibber-ometer Legs?
Splendid.. just what the site needs… a Blaine caption competition!
I think Blaine is saying to Stan (to his right) “It may look like a basket case now son, but I’ll turn this into a race winner” and Stan says “that’s another fine dress you’ve got me into!” Boom Boom!
Hey Jonesey, you can’t publish your pre race report for the next meeting BEFORE the official post race report for the last meeting has been sent out!
Blaine’s love of manual labour is well known, but he has been hiding his literary skills under a bushel…it is not so well known that Blaine wrote a number 1 bestselling book on Topiary entitled “The first cut is the deepest”
Or is Stan saying “I need a reason to be-Neave”….?
Come on now guys, not sure if “that old heart of his” can take it anymore

Wrong !! ( note to self - finish newsletter before Friday )
Jonesey is a free agent and may publish anything he is prepared to defend in court ( or retract with an apology ). Freedom of speech and all that….
Given the sometimes erratic rate at which posts appear on this site we should petition for Jonesey to be elevated to Lord Jonesey, then as a life peer he would be a Lord Temporal and could post whenever he pleased.
In fact, if we get in quick, it might be a good sponsorship route to reregister the series as The Right Honourable Peter Best Insurance Championship, MP for Old Sarum, I sure all expenses would be justifiable…….
Dave
Perhaps more appropriate for Blaine would be “Smoke gets in my eyes”?…or whatabout..”If you Neave me now”…
I think Lord Jonesey has a nice ring to it
I must say I always had Jonesey down as some sort of Lord…
Thank you for that….I will look forward to throwing down the gauntlet round Paddock Hill bend!
I see the official website has a new slogan - “Remember we all do this for fun“…..now where have I heard that before….?
Absolutely cracking. I’ve never seen so much cobblers in so few posts - That has to be a new gibberish record! We are just waiting for the officials…….And yes its a new record, hardly any mention of racing in the last 15 posts. Well done everybody!
I’m suprised nobody has picked up on the Paddock Hill/cork comment - must be some mileage in that (well 2 or 3 laps).
As for the oversize overalls - could it have been a misunderstanding? Three sets of overalls - Overalls for three. OK they may get through scrutineering, but practice has got to be seen……. We are the knights that say Nee! (or is that Neaves).
you haven’t seen my overalls yet…..
Did I miss something so who are lumbered with the metros…..
Why does this keep happening if we have a full grid why do we get mixed up
Pete
Just to let people know Pictures are now up on my website all done by my son
http://www.photoboxgallery.com/3002305/collection?album_id=112888792
Good chance it could be Class F Or T or both
I would be more than happy to be out with the metros or MGOC class F & Z
May have half a chance of seeing the start lights at the front end of the grid?
If the silver fox is volunteering to go Metro bashing, I won’t be standing in his way!
Pete,
I think you missed the point. We have a full grid and we have some people in another grid.
Dave
If we missed the point, can i have it please
Yeap brain needs to engage a bit…..
